How to Extract Stock Recovery from Samsung Firmware! - Page 2

If you have rooted your Samsung Galaxy Note 4, Note 3, Note 2, S6, S5, S4, S3, S2, or any other Samsung devices including tablets, mostly like you have installed a custom recovery like CWM or TWRP.  Well, if you want to receive stock OTA updates (perhaps you want to try the latest firmware that came out last night and you are still on stock firmware), you will need to re-install stock recovery.

How to do this?

The process is actually rather simple.  You need to download the latest stock Samsung firmware for your model of Samsung device, extract the recovery.img file from it, then compress it back into tar file and flash with ODIN.

Step 1. Download appropriate Samsung stock firmware for your device:

  • Galaxy Note 4 Stock Firmwares – Link
  • Galaxy Note 3 Stock Firmwares – Link
  • Galaxy S5 Stock Firmwares – Link
  • Galaxy S4 Stock Firmwares – Link
  • Galaxy S3 Stock Firmwares – Link

Don’t see your device?  Try

Step 2. Unzip the files.

Step 3. Open the .tar.md5 file using 7Zip. (Download 7Zip)

Step 4. You should find the recovery.img file, this is the stock recovery file for your Samsung device.  Select it and hit Extract.

Step 5. Compress the file using 7Zip in “.tar” format.

Step 6. Put your Samsung device in ODIN Download mode, select AP or PDA in ODIN program and select the new “recovery.tar” file, then hit “Start”.

If done successfully, your phone will reboot and you should have stock recovery back.  To reboot into recovery and check, power off your phone then hold down Volume Up, Center Home, and Power buttons.  (You can also use QuickBoot app on PlayStore to reboot into recovery if you have a rooted device.)

Now, you have learned how to re-install stock recovery.  If you are running rooted stock firmware (meaning you’ve rooted your phone but did not install custom ROM OR you have restored  your stock ROM using CWM or TWRP), you can use this method to re-enable OTA(over-the-air) updates.  Now, you may also have to remove root, simply use SuperSU app to unroot also.  You can easily re-root after OTA by re-install CWM or TWRP recovery then flashing SuperSU zip file.

That’s about it, if you lost root and need to re-root, see our How to Root Android page!

You can also install the recovery.img file using Flashify app. (Skip Step 5 and 6 as you don’t need the tar file.)

  2. Wes says:

This does not work. You need to convert the img file to a tar.md5 else it epically fails during flashing. I thought I wrecked my phone by following this guide, luckily it accepted TWRP again and in time, once I found another guide to make a .tar.md5, my original recovery can be flashed.

    • Max Lee says:

Yes, if you will see that I converted to .tar in Step 5. You do not need to convert it to tar.md5 to flash, the md5 part is optional but ODIN works fine without.

2nd question:If I unroot from SuperSU ,The root will be gone?
    I am runnimg stock 4.2.2.

    • Rawand Haidar says:

Hi Andrei, Installing Stock Rom From Samsung will remove the root and the custom recovery (kernel), so you don’t need flashing another kernel. that’s the easiest way.

Hi, i got SG N7000 which currently can go to “Download mode” only. Cannot charge. Can’t go to “Recovery mode”. I had tried several CwMod which i downloaded from the internet.

    1. Flashing CwM won’t pass if i choose “AP” on the ODIN.
    2. Using “PHONE” (ODIN) will make them through but after auto restart, it still stuck @ samsung logo.

****All i need is to make this phone’s “Recovery Mode” works again***

Runs out of idea, need advice, truly noob in this part. Perhaps i missed or done something wrong in the process.

Hey mate find the Cf auto root for your phone & the stock firmware for your model.

I had the exact same problem after successfully rooting then failing later. it would load up ( Set warranty bit : kernal, recovery is not seandroid enforcing, and some other rare message).

I flashed cf auto root onto my phone via Odin 3.09 pda/ap with auto reset and F. Time. Reset selected.

Once that past Odin & rebooted cf auto it put me straight back into recovery mode, but i could not factory reset to start,

sp i flashed the stock firmware using same Odin. Which has now lead to a unleashed firmware & improved device beyond belief. S4 LTE-A SHV-E330S South-Korea, but im in australia.

  14. Jay P says:

Just tried this on my rooted Note 4 (N910W8). Stock recovery restored successfully, but device still showed Custom status. I unrooted via SuperSU Pro, but still no luck. Samsung OTA Update still knows my device is customised and won’t check for update.

I went ahead and flash the full stock image (OE2). Device was not wiped (still had my Apps etc.) Device has checked and now downloading OTA updates. There should be no problem with the update. Will report back if there is any.

Thank you for the tips! Users should just flash the entire full stock image instead of just the Recovery if above method does not work.

Hi I have a cricket s6(G920AZ) and this guide almost sounds like what I wanna do but I’m completely stock no root. I am trying to get this >>> @chainfireThe kernel and recovery format must be the boot.img standard (no zImage support)
    – I need the recovery.img file, so post it in this thread if you need support for a new device<<< so he can add my variant to cfautoroot. Since I updated to 5.1.1 there is nothing I can do yet to gain root access. If you can help guide me through on how to do this I would really appreciate it. I have a windows 10 laptop if needed.

I have a SM-G900P Galaxy S5. It was bought as a TextNow phone. TextNow ROMs are unlocked and I believe rooted..(not sure about rooted).

I was having problems with reception and gps tried resetting and everything.. and long story short, I mistakenly installed a stock Sprint 5.0 rom. I didn’t know anything about locks and roots at the time.. Just thought it wouldn’t hurt to try a Sprint Rom to see if it was any better..

I had asked for a TextNow for a rom to try a reinstall to make things better but didn’t realize trying the Sprint Rom first would create my nightmare…

When I then went to use ODIN to install the textnow tar.md5 it failed.. Since then, about 2 weeks is when I learned about locked bootloaders.

Is there any way to use this method or any other method to get my phone back to operating as TextNow rather than Sprint?

I was able to use Flashify to install TWRP, which surprised me considering it failed with ODIN. I was hopeful when I TWRP recovered and then discovered TWRP doesn’t do tar.md5. Will using the textnow recovery.img work or brick the phone.
